Obituary for Jean W. Abar

Jean W. Abar
Jean W. Abar, wife, mother and always giving spirit passed away on December 19, 2015 at the age of 85 in Stafford Springs, CT. Jean was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Lawrence, her eldest son, Edward, and her brother, George. She is survived by her children Michael, Steven, Matthew, Bernadette, Barbara, Irene, Laura, George and Jeffery, her grandchildren Daniel, David, Emory, Abigail, Molly, Rachel, Joseph, Thomas, Livesey, Oliver, Emmett, Lily and Vivian, her great grandchild Edward, and her many in-laws and extended family.
Jean was born in 1930 and raised in Union City and North Bergen, NJ. After high school she worked at AT&T. Jean and Larry met on New Year’s Eve, fell in love and married in 1951. After traveling for Larry’s Air Force service, they settled in Medfield and then Hampden, MA. They raised ten children. Jean volunteered countless hours as a librarian in the Hampden schools, supporting St. Mary’s Parish, and helping families at the Open Pantry.
Jean is remembered for happy stories of her childhood days at the farm, a passion for history and biography, especially of the Civil War, tracking New England’s seasons, blossoms and birds, sharing good books and the day’s funniest comic, a busy kitchen of big dinners and small treats, laughing with Larry and friends, and for her wit and cheer. Jean was committed to the Church and found peace in prayer. Above all, Jean was a devoted wife and caring mother. Larry was the love of her life, and her home and heart were always open and nurturing.
Jean asked that memorial donations be made to the Open Pantry Community Services of Springfield at www.openpantry.org.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 12 P.M. Monday, December 28, 2015, at St. Mary’s Parish, Hampden, MA. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Hampden. Visitation will be prior to mass from 9:30 A.M, to 11:30 A.M. at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, 43 Shaker Rd. Enfield, CT.
